update 3. Welcome to
The North Devon Times BUSINESS CENTRE.
STAND TALL-
if you are one of the almost 4
million owner-managed businesses in the UK. You
are a very important part of the economy!
Around 13 million people work
in small businesses- over 58% of the private sector workforce- generating
more than half the nation's GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
90% of commercial innovations come from owner-managed business.
An impressive contribution to
UK plc that has gone almost
unrecognised by any government in my living memory.
Why is this? Perhaps it is because we are not aware of the
contribution that all our small efforts add up to?
Every year over 500,000 people
start-up their own business - taking on the risks associated with
being 'on your own'. Many discover
that they need to enlist help in various skill requirements as running any
business today is a heavily regulated occupation- fraught with more pitfalls
than ever before.
"I am closing a relief under
which, for tax reasons only, people are being persuaded without changing what
they do to set up a company, replacing the £10,000 starting allowance with a
rise in the investment allowances for smaller businesses to 50 per cent." -
Said Brown The Chancellor of The Exchequer in his off-hand pre-budget speech to
the House of Commons - 7 December 2005.. This will impose an immediate
NEW TAX burden of up to £1900 a year on those small limited Companies who re-invested
profits in the business. Try
as we did, we could not find any criticism of this move of the long arm.
Indeed The Federation for Small Businesses have given his report the
thumbs-up!
Our first experience of
getting up and running was a nightmare of detail and worry that the money would
run-out before sales were at least break-even. I
remember how difficult (and often very lonely) it is out there- surrounded by
investigators from almost every conceivable area of activity asking us to pay
them to get certified in this- that- and the- other. It is estimated that
it costs at least £5 in every £100 of your sales for this new form of
taxation.
At The
North Devon Times
we are committed to promoting business development and growth of the
owner-managed business community- in whatever field- wherever you live.
The first thing we should do is
drop the current jargon of 'micro-small-medium'- words that mean more to
a piece of steak than to a community responsible for producing
almost all the new innovations - employing over half of the private sector- and
contributing more than half of the UK's GDP.
It
really is time to stand tall!
Who is really lobbying on your
behalf?
This question will be a regular
focus and the B2B
Forum- will provide a platform for discussion-planning-lobbying in the
interests of the owner-managed business community.
We look forward to you joining
and telling us what you think.
